Artist profile: Tina Turner
As I watched Tina Turner’s recent appearance on Oprah, I was awed by a few things. She is still one of the most beautiful women in the world, at nearly 70 years old, and I was struck by how elegant and strong she is. She’s a different woman from the girl who first gained prominence in the 1960s. Turner proved that a woman can overcome a number of obstacles with grace and fortitude and maintain a great pair of legs.
I remember the first time I’d heard of Tina Turner. It was 1984, I was about 10 or 11, and I was watching the “What’s Love Got to Do With It” music video with my family. She had this wild hairstyle and was wearing a short skirt that revealed legs that I haven’t been able to attain after years in the gym. During the video, my parents informed me that she wasn’t a new singer; they told me that she’d been around since the 1960s. Of course, my dad commented on how good she looked. Then, my parents talked about the physical abuse she received from her ex-husband, Ike Turner. Years later, while watching a documentary, I saw an old picture of her with a black eye, probably as a result of a beating.

Music Instrument : How to Choose Violin Strings
Choosing what strings to buy for your violin can be a daunting process. There are numerous makers, with numerous styles of strings, and every player has their own preferences as to what they think works best. Throw in combinations of different strings, and the possible combinations are limitless. So how do you choose what strings are right for your violin?
The first thing that you must understand is that each string will react differently on each violin. One string may make one violin sound incredibly bright, while on another violin that same string may sound dark. Experimentation is really the only way to discover what will be the right string for your violin. Of course, you may have some preferences to the type of sound you want, and that will help you discover what strings to start experimenting with.

Music Instrument : Best brands of electric guitars
Now it is slightly unfair to say that one guitar manufacturer is better than another but what I’m going to speak about now is just based on my experiences and knowledge of what I consider to be some of my favourite electric guitar brands ever
Gibson
Gibsons are renowned for many things. They’re used in all sorts of genres. Most guitarists aspire to own one of these beautiful instruments at some stage of their lives. To understand this desire, you must have experienced a Gibson at least once. The prime Gibson out there would be the Les Paul, named after one of the late, great influences of the guitar and the technology that it possesses today. If you’ve seen this guitar before, then you’ve witnessed beauty. If you’ve heard the amazing sound that its strings gracefully produce, comparable only to the sound of angels’ voices, then you surely must have fallen in love with it immediately. It’s this and more that makes a Gibson one of the best guitars ever.

Instruments of the Orchestra: The flute
Before the early 20th century, wooden flutes were more common. Theobald Boehm introduced silver flutes as early as 1847 but they were not generally accepted till much later. Between 1832 and 1847, Boehm also worked on the fingering system and key mechanism resulting in a radically improved dynamic range and much better intonation. It also allows extraordinary agility and brilliance throughout the range. The most radical change to the Boehm system occurred with the substitution by Briccialdi of a thumb key mechanism. The Boehm system of fingering is also used in saxophones and players in jazz groups or small ensembles will often alternate between the two instruments.
Concert flutes consist of a headjoint, body and foot joint. Gross adjustments of pitch can be made by moving the headjoint in or out. Moving the flute in relation to the player or altering the embouchure allows fine adjustments of pitch and/or tone colour. The headjoint can be swapped with another according to the individual’s preference and may result in a completely different sound.
Music instruments : New and Exotic Musical Instruments
I love playing the piano and guitar, but being one who bucks convention, I also gravitated toward musical instruments not normally played today. My collection includes a teardrop Mountain Dulcimer and a Bowed Psaltery.
The Mountain Dulcimer bears no resemblance to the hammered dulcimer, whose strings are struck with hammers rather than being strummed. The Mountain Dulcimer is so named because it was first built by the people living in the mountains of Appalachia. It began as a crude sort of guitar, and became a beautiful instrument on its own. Jeanne Ritchie is the most famous Mountain Dulcimer player, and Cyndi Lauper played one in one of her videos.
Traditionally, the Mountain Dulcimer is played using a goose feather as a plectrum, but I also use a regular ultra thin guitar pick because the feather quills shred so easily. This instrument has more of a kinship with the zither and is played in much the same way. There are four strings, the two highest of which are tuned to the same note. The three standard tunings are D-A-A, D-A-D, and D-A-C. I use the first tuning most often.
Music Production: Tips for Recording Better Electric Bass Tracks
Introduction
The electric bass is often an overlooked part of recordings. Although most probably don’t do it intentionally, the bass becomes unimportant because less experienced engineers tend to focus strongly on “more important” tracks such as the snare drum or the all-important lead vocal. The reality is that the bass sound is essential to making a really great sounding recording. Here are some tips to help improve your bass sound.
The Most Important Thing
An all too often overlooked aspect of getting good bass sounds is the bass and the bass player. Make sure you have the right bass for the job. Also, you’d be surprised how different two tracks are where everything was identical except the player. A great, experienced bass player can make a world of difference.

Music Production : Tips for recording piano
Recording a piano is a daunting experience. You need a microphone especially designed for doing so as most normal mikes will produce a very unnatural sound.
Why that is, I’m not sure, but a regular mike is unable to record the actual sound of each string as it is played because the ambience that it picks up along with the sound itself produces a thin echo effect that just doesn’t sound right.
There are mikes that attach to the sound board that pick up the vibrations of the strings being played rather than those that are placed on or around the piano.
They do not pick up the echo or ambience, and are much more accurate for producing life like piano sound in the recording.

Music Production : Tips for recording your own song
When you listen to your favorite CD, do you ever wonder the hours people put into making it the best possible recording that suits the fans and the sound desired? It’s not an easy process and takes some artistry when it comes to mixing. However, knowing a few tricks and tips can help you achieve that desired sound.
The first thing that every recording needs is a good EQ. This is maybe one of the trickiest parts of mixing and/or recording, however it is advisable to add the EQ effects afterwards in case anything needs to be changed later. Other effects such as reverb and delays should be added after as well.
Depending on your softward or hardware capabilities, there are several advanced EQ’ing plug-ins. Knowing how to do the simple twists will help you play around more with the different frequencies on more advance programs.
Music History : Musical memories: The Beatles
These things are always subjective, but people are wrong to say modern rock and pop music can’t cut it. There’s still good music being made, but still no group comes close to matching The Beatles.
Firstly, The Beatles made music which will surely last as long as the popular song itself. Secondly, like Elvis Presley, The Beatles made a cultural impact which transcended their music. Finally, they were great entertainers – and their comic turns in the movies ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ and ‘Help!’ shouldn’t be underestimated. Even in a golden decade of creativity like the 1960s, which was often described as a second renaissance, The Beatles are remembered by most as the main creative force of that decade. Everything seemed to revolve around them, and bounce off them.
