Flyers: Its Colorful and Almost Musical History

A variety of changes and trends have helped shaped the flyer as we know. Among these, are the pulls of the market, the emergence of consumer goods and of course, popular culture.

In popular culture, flyers played a huge role in the promotion of various bands or DJs. These small printouts were handed out or glued to strategic locations in public places such as subways, bus stations and busy streets.

Then, these flyers usually indicate the time and place of an event – be it a gig, a performance in a dance club or a concert. These flyers can also serve as teasers to plant seeds of curiosity and coax people to come and take part in the event.

Music Band : The legacy of Black Sabbath

by Wayne K. Wilkins

Black Sabbath are one of the most popular and influential bands in the history of the epic heavy metal genre of music. From their eponymous self-titled debut, “Black Sabbath” on the eve of Friday February 13th 1970, Black Sabbath were standing on the heels of success. Following the grizzly and brutal “Manson Family Murders” in the August of 1969 that bought the peace and love era of the 1960′s to a gruesome end; a band by the name of Black Sabbath emerged basing their songs on darkness, evil and the devil. This was the sound that would become submerged in history and legacy over the course of the next 40 years, all thanks to the legacy that this one band created upon their formation in the year of 1968.

Music History : The history of hip hop

Recently, a Black person told me that there was no Black music. The point that she was trying to make, was that since she knew White people that listened to hip-hop and that she knew Black people that listened to Country and Rock & Roll, therefore music has no color. I disagree. We, as Black people, need to be proud of all of the accomplishments that we have, and being the creators of Gospel, Jazz, Blues, Soul, Funk, New Jack Swing, Go-Go, Neo-Soul, R&B, Rap, and Hip-Hop is definitely a big achievement for us to be proud of.

Our music is derived from a strong, courageous people that even while being enslaved used their minds, talents, and creativity to use their music to not only entertain themselves, but to help set themselves free. It’s been said, that songs such as “Wade in the Water” and “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot” contain coded messages to aid slaves on their journey to freedom. Black music has definitely evolved from the Spirituals, Field Hollers, and Work Songs of slavery times.
