Drums and Percussion in Traditional West African Music

Drums and percussion have featured in West African music and culture for literally thousands of years; it forms the basis of communication and social structure in that region and music has traditionally been used as a means of recording social history so that it can be passed from generation to generation. This article is a brief introduction to the nature of that music.

History

Archaeological digs have discovered evidence of drums, drums sticks and other percussion instruments in the region. Some of the rhythms played today were formed hundreds of years ago (it’s almost impossible to know exactly when) and it is quite clear that the influences for these rhythms came from nature. One ancient rhythm called ‘KuKu’ quite clearly imitates the sound of a bird.

Country Music’s Earliest Pioneers

Country Music as we know it has been around for decades, with the 1920′s seen as the ‘era’ of Country; with thousands of faces, some well-known, some fading into obscurity lining the Hall of Fame, who are the important figureheads in the history of Country Music? Who pioneered it, we know and love today? Here are some of the founders:

A.C Robertson
Alexander (known as Eck) Robertson recorded the first commercial Country Music song in 1922! He was born in 1887 and lived in Texas, growing up learning to play the fiddle, he eventually found himself with a recording contract. In 1922 Eck recorded the now famous track “Sally Gooden.” It never made it big, and it didn’t sell many copies, but he began the industry we know today.
As the first ever recorded artist, Eck Robertson certainly deserves to be considered a pioneer.

Music Production : Tips for recording piano

Recording a piano is a daunting experience. You need a microphone especially designed for doing so as most normal mikes will produce a very unnatural sound.

Why that is, I’m not sure, but a regular mike is unable to record the actual sound of each string as it is played because the ambience that it picks up along with the sound itself produces a thin echo effect that just doesn’t sound right.

There are mikes that attach to the sound board that pick up the vibrations of the strings being played rather than those that are placed on or around the piano.
They do not pick up the echo or ambience, and are much more accurate for producing life like piano sound in the recording.
