A Brief History of John Lennon

As most of us associate John Lennon with The Beatles, very few recognize Lennon’s solo career and additional accomplishments.  This witty man, known for his rebellious nature and gentle spirit made a name, not only as a member of a band, but also as an activist, songwriter, peace activist and author.  Even out of the spotlight, Lennon created a family/home life and took time to be a human of average nature.

John Winston Ono Lennon was born on October 9, 1940 in Liverpool.  Lennon only lived with his parents for a short amount of time, then spent the rest of his younger years living with his aunt and uncle in Woolton.  Lennon formed The Beatles in 1957, at the young age of sixteen.  The band, still recognized today as a historic moment in musical history, hit the charts almost immediately.

Music and Dancing in Greenland

While Iceland may boast popular singers and alternative bands such as The Sugarcubes, its musical history is fairly straight forward. Holidays to Iceland could see you attending the performances of Emiliana Torrini and Sigur Rós, or you could spend your time at Iceland Airwaves, a music festival where local and international bands perform at clubs throughout Reykjavík. If you are interested in music, you can see most types of music and performances, as you embark on an exciting specialist holiday in Iceland.

But it is Greenland’s musical history that is particularly intriguing. Greenland’s modern musical scene sees the amalgamation of Inuit and Danish music, combined with the added influences of some Canadian territories, Alaska and Eastern Russia. A rich musical tradition exists here, with all music types from folk songs to rock music forming an integral part of Greenlandic life. Greenland travel could see you dancing to the rhythms of Shamans and bopping to the music of hip-hop artist, Nuuk Posse, and it’s worth investigating Greenland package holidays to see if you can tie in a performance with your trip.

Bakersfield is Good Stop for Country Music

Driving through California’s Central Valley it’s easy to speed right on by Bakersfield, the southernmost of the Valley’s good-sized cities and the last one you’ll pass before you head up the Grapevine toward Los Angeles. But next time, consider this: You’re passing through Music History and it just might be worth your while to stop.

That’s especially true if you’re a country music fan. Long after the Nashville sound had taken hold and made that Tennessee city the capital of what was then called “country-western” music, some brave musicians in the city of Bakersfield challenged the status quo. Coming out of the honky-tonk bars in Bakersfield was a sound that was a little rough around the edges and not as slickly produced as the music produced in Nashville in the late 1950′s. Bakersfield groups started including some elements of rock and roll and, by the early 60′s, such artists as Merle Haggard and Buck Owens were taking the Bakersfield Sound national.

Click Here to find out more about the show characters and pawn industry stats

The television program that I have in mind is the Pawn Stars television program on the History Channel. The show features new episodes Monday nights at 10pm E.T., but often airs previous shows in earlier time slots throughout the week. Another option I recently found out about is that the shows are also available to view using the cable on demand feature.

Indie Music is Pretty Swede – The Swedish Indie Music Empire

When it comes to indie music, there are many hotbeds of talent but Sweden isn’t normally one you would naturally think of. Unfortunately, the music history of that nation appears to start and end with Abba for many people, but over the past decade or so, there have been a growing number of bands from Sweden impacting on the indie world.

The most noticeable would be The Cardigans who achieved massive worldwide fame with their ‘Lovefool’ single and blend of charming and slightly tween indie-pop. Perhaps as a reaction to their fame, The Cardigans changed their style, their music got harder and Nina Persson went from blonde to brunette. They may not feature on the radio as much today as they used to but the band still draws a fairly large crowd to any festival they perform at.

Who Are The Top Ten Music Artists In The UK For 2010?

We thought we would take a little look around the internet to find the top ten artists from the music industry of all time. This proved quite difficult as there are so many different sources and opinions. As a result we decided to set our sights a little lower and narrowed our search to the UK only. Below you will find our results. There are some surprises in there so enjoy what you see.

The Beatles

I don’t suppose the Beatles will surprise anybody but yes our Liverpool friends top the chart with a whopping 28,000,000 certified sales. You may think that that sounds great but we also believe that they are the top in the world with worldwide sales topping 346,000,000 sales. These figures are just unbelievable but not UN just as they continue to sell music even today.

Piano Lessons – Kids Do NOT Learn Music Faster Than Adults

Let’s do some myth-busting, because this is my favorite myth to bust as a career piano teacher. Ready…?
The popular notion that kids learn music faster than adults is… completely false! It’s categorically untrue. Where it has come from over the years is a piece of neuroscience being erroneously applied to a situation in which it has no basis.

What this means is children between the ages of two and six years old have an advantage learning a particular skill called absolute pitch. That means they learn to identify a musical pitch by letter name solely through hearing it, with no reference note given for comparison. They learn to hear and identify a particular sound in the sonority of the pitch and can forever automatically identify that pitch by it’s name with certainty. This is something that about two percent of the general population is born with the ability to do, however, if one is not a trained musician, then no one knows that the ability is there in a person. It is an advantageous ability for musicians to have, yet it is not a hinderance to lack this ability. Additionally, about 85% of professional string players develop this ability just in the course of learning their instrument.

New Vinyl Website Focuses on the Social Elements of Records and Music

Well, we made it. The vinyl record revival is in full swing. With many independent artists issuing new releases via the format and many mainstream artists following suit, it is a great place in music history. Add to this the numerous reissues of classic LP’s and the vinyl comeback is complete.

Along with the vinyl revival are new Internet web sites that cater to collectors and music lovers. One such site that has just launched is www.NYLVI.com, is social marketplace that will support independent artists, labels and record stores and will aid in the spreading of musical innovation to the global community of music lovers and record collectors.

I spoke with NYLVI co-founder Ivar Lien about the goals, ideals and values of this new, growing vinyl record community:

There are many vinyl sites on the Internet today, what will set yours apart from the others- what will make you unique?
